School may have started and summer festivals have ended, but there’s still sunshine and festivals happening well into October. Festival season never has to end.
A month ago I (Brianna, Communications Coordinator here at Nuvango and musician) was able to check out WayHome and bring a little Nuvango with me. It’s safe to say the festival’s sophomore year was a sweltering success. Nothing like spending the hottest weekend in the summer with your best pals surrounded by art and music. I’ve always thought of music festivals as somewhat of a playground… for adults. Everyone is stranded on this field filled with food, art, and music for three straight days.
Wayhome does a great job of giving festival goers a lot to experience in the way of art, filling the place with installations. This year’s art was curated by Charles Bierk, whose striking oil paintings could be found flanking the stages. Trevor Wheatley and Aaron Li-Hill teamed up to create the beautiful and very instagrammable 3D text-based installations hanging above the stage pathways, and the grounds at Burl’s Creek were littered with medieval flags created by Angus Watt. They even had an artist walk on the Thursday night (for all the keeners) where attendees were able to take a stroll around the grounds with the artists themselves and see firsthand the pieces they created.
LCD Soundsystem filled the stage with a massive disco ball the audience could bask in while dancing to James Murphy’s classic Dance Yrself Clean on Friday. Saturday brought us a sparkling Arcade Fire filled with confetti and their lush, theatrical sounds.
Sunday was my fav day. Oh Wonder, with their sweet disposition and slow-grooving R&B flecked tunes won over the early crowd in the afternoon. BORNS won ME over with his cropped vintage tee and loafers, and Fleetwood Mac met Destiny’s child with sister band Haim - so what more can you really ask for?
For me, beyond falling in love with the music and the festival experience, taking in festival fashion is something I love. People get outrageous, push their fashion comfort zones, and pull out all the stops! I saw a lot of colourful patterns and interesting pairings tied together perfectly with the Wayhome backdrop.
I brought along some of my fav Nuvango pieces to mix with my festival staples. The woven shorts were perfect for dancing around during the day with their high waisted fit. I also threw on my Cobblestones Kimono over a denim skirt and bra top to shield me from that summer sun.
Feeling a little WAYHOMESICK these days… yeah, me too. BUT! Festival season isn’t over, there are still chances and opportunities to hit up the festival circuit this month and well into October.
